Advising Basics
The
Advising Services Office provides
information to students who have additional
questions after meeting with their Faculty
Advisor. Information from this office does
not take place of meetings with the
student’s Faculty Advisor. The office
provides further
information, resources, major and minor
information, Professional Program admission
criteria, as well as pertinent forms and
documentation needed for graduation.

Expectations of the Advising Services Office:
-
Meet with students who need further
assistance after speaking with their faculty
advisor.
-
Complete the change of major/minor paperwork
with students and review requirements.
-
Assign Faculty Advisors to incoming
students.
-
Hold academic workshops for students
throughout the semester.
-
Meet with students
who wish to study
at another institution.
-
Post substitutions and record all waivers
for students.
-
Admit students to the Professional Program
and send correspondence about admission.
-
Advise all business minors throughout their
career at Salisbury.
-
Communicate curriculum, graduation
requirements, and university policies and
procedures to faculty and students.

Expectations of Students:

Assist students in exploring areas
of study. Help students
choose the appropriate majors,
minors, and tracks.
-
Have a minimum of five office hours
each week. These hours will be
posted on your Faculty Advisor’s
door or website.

Communicate degree requirements,
curriculum, graduation requirements,
and policies/procedures to students.
-
Listen to students and
confidentially advise them.
Faculty Advisors will not speak
with your parents about your
academics.

Refer students to other offices when
appropriate.
-
Provide accurate
information to students.

Accept responsibility for your
academic progression and decisions.
-
Review your degree progress report
each semester and track your
progression.
-
Meet with your Faculty Advisor at
least once a semester.
-
Come prepared to all advising
meetings with questions and advising
materials.

Review SU and PSB policies and
procedures in your catalog and
direct any questions to your
faculty advisor.
-
Seek out help when needed, do not
wait until the last minute.

Check your GroupWise account on a
weekly basis.

Yearly Goals:
Freshman Year

Attend PSB Open House.

Register
for and
complete GENL 001.

Explore academic and career
interests with your Faculty Advisor
and/or Career Services.

Review your general education
requirements in your catalog and on
your degree progress report.

Read your degree progress report and
see
your Faculty Advisor
with any questions
you may have.

Sign-up and attend Group Scheduling
to have your schedule reviewed and
approved for the next semester.
Sophomore Year
-
Assess your academic strengths and
interests as well as your career
goals. Choose an area of
academic study that will meet these
goals.

Review the major and minor
checklists and ask your advisor or
department representative
for
more information about the
major/and or minor you are
considering.

Understand the criteria needed for
admission into the Perdue School and
have the criteria completed
by the end of this year to apply.

Sign-up and attend Group
Scheduling to have your schedule
reviewed and approved for the next
semester.
Junior Year
-
Admitted PSB students must attend
Junior Orientation.

Sign up for MGMT 320 and BUAD 300.
-
Create and build your resume.
-
Research career options with Career
Services.
-
Attend the Job Fair and ABLE
workshop.
-
Find and secure an internship.
-
Meet with your Faculty Advisor
during program planning to review
your next semester’s schedule.

Identify skills needed for
employment/ internship and attend
training for them.
Senior Year
-
Attend the Job Fair.
-
Complete your Graduation Application
and order your cap and gown.
-
Update your resume with your
internship information.
-
Research employment and/or graduate
school and start applying.
-
Complete a Graduation Audit with
your Faculty Advisor.
-
Meet with your Faculty Advisor
during program planning to review
your last semester’s schedule.
-
Make sure your requirements are up
to date and all transfer coursework
is posted
