Frequently Asked Questions
About the ABLE Program
What is an Internship?
An
internship is an on-site learning
experience in a work setting that is related to a student’s particular
major and personal interests.
All business students are required to
complete am Applied
Business Learning Experience as a part of their undergraduate degree.
Finance, Information Systems, and Economic majors have practicum
and portfolio courses that can substitute for an internship
experience.
Students receiving credit for their internship experience will
need to work approximately 10 hours per week for 10 weeks during the
semester, a minimum of 100 hours of on-site
experience.
The work site experience must be completed at the same time a
student is registered in and completing the 490/491 three credit class.

internship duties outside of these time periods but only

What is the process for
finding and securing an internship?
Internships can be found using eRecruiting or
created through personal networks. As part of the job
seeking process, students need to apply, interview, and be
selected for an internship prior to registering for an
internship course for credit. The selection of a
student by a company will be very similar to selection for
employment. Students should:
-
Upload a resume
and provide an electronic cover letter when requested.
-
Use eRecruiting to apply directly to organizations
with available internships.
-
Prepare for an interview and dress appropriately when meeting
employers. Employers will contact students directly to schedule an
interview and to notify students of an internship offer. Career
Services offers several workshops that can help prepare students for
interviews.
-
After receiving an
internship offer from a company, students must complete the online
application. Once their portion is completed, an email will be sent
to their site supervisor/employer requesting they complete their
portion. Once the employer's section is complete, the
department chair or representative will review and either approve it
or indicate it as "pending". Once approved, an email will be
sent to the students' SU email with the permission number needed to
enroll as well as first class meeting details.
The ABLE office does not place
students in internships. However, if you have any questions or are
having problems finding an internship please contact the ABLE office for
guidance.

Can I complete an internship with my
current employer?
Students may be able to do an internship with a
current employer. However, the internship can not include normal
duties already performed by the student. Internships with current
employers must include new assignments and/or projects specifically
related to a student's major. Internships with current employers
must be approved by the student's department chair and by the ABLE
office to be eligible for credit.
Can I intern with family?
No. Interning with family is prohibited.
