Dr. George Summers
Dr. George Summers

Dr. George Summers, our friend and professor of accounting, passed away on Monday, June 26, 2017. His absence is deeply felt by all who knew him, especially as we begin this new semester. We will remember George for his kindness, generosity and strong work ethic.

After completing his Ph.D. in accounting from the University of Houston in 2003, he served as a software applications consultant for SAP Public Services, Inc. and the U.S. Army Logistics Modernization Program. Dr. Summers joined the SU accounting faculty in fall 2006. During his tenure at SU, he taught individual and corporate taxation, accounting information systems, and M.B.A. managerial accounting. He also was very actively engaged in the process of incorporating new technologies (e.g. SAP, XBRL) into the classroom.

A Celebration of Life will be held in George’s honor on Tuesday, October 3, noon in the Worcester Room of the Commons at SU. His family will be attending, and we welcome his friends, colleagues and students to attend. Many who knew him have a profound regard for George’s nature. You are encouraged to share any stories you may have that speak to his one-of-a-kind character. If you would prefer that someone else read your story at the celebration, just let us know.

To keep his spirit alive, we have established a scholarship in his name. We hope to announce a sizeable contribution amount at this event and hope that you will consider contributing to this fund in any amount you feel comfortable (
