Employer Spotlight: Smartlink
Smartlink, headquartered in Annapolis, MD, is a national staffing and services company that delivers solutions for the development, engineering and maintenance of new and existing communications infrastructures.
Smartlink CEO, and Salisbury University alum, Brendan Kelly, founded Smartlink in 2000. Before that, in the late 1990s, Kelly was an entrepreneur working for a family business selling generators. Cellphone companies began buying these generators to use as backup power for their cell towers, and as Kelly’s sales to these companies increased, he became interested in learning about wireless technology and the telecom industry. He saw an opportunity to fulfill staffing needs for communications companies, therefore founding Smartlink, a one-of-a-kind company that thrives on cultivating teamwork and competition among the candidates it places in the workforce.
Smartlink expanded to include a services division in 2006, offering site acquisition and construction management for new site builds, upgrades, land acquisitions and more for leading communications companies.
In 2013, Smartlink acquired RealCom Associates, a Seattle-based site development and staffing firm with a strong presence on the West Coast. This acquisition expanded Smartlink’s national footprint, adding offices in Los Angeles, Portland, San Francisco and Seattle. In 2014, Smartlink added IT to its staffing fields of specialty, which include real estate, construction and engineering. Today, Smartlink does business in 43 states and is exploring opportunities to expand on a global scale.
Smartlink was named one of SmartCEO’s "100 Best Run Companies" in 2012 and received the 2014 "Supplier Growth Award" from Verizon/Pontoon Solutions for its expansive success in staffing placements.
In 2015, Smartlink founded a community outreach program, Linking It Forward. Smartlink has always strived to maintain a culture of hard-working, well-rounded employees with an all-in mentality. Through partnerships with local and national charities, this program further promotes this goal by staying involved and giving employees regular opportunities to give back to the communities in which they live and work.
Between its Annapolis headquarters and 20 additional locations across the country, Smartlink employs more than 700 professionals.
The sports mentality has always been at the core of Smartlink, as Kelly’s ability to build and grow teams is evident in the success of all the businesses he touches. Kelly purchased the Washington Bayhawks, a Major League Lacrosse (MLL) team, in 2010. He then changed the team’s name to the Chesapeake Bayhawks to encompass the fan base of Maryland’s surrounding states, including Virginia, West Virginia, Delaware and Washington, D.C. Before this acquisition, Smartlink sponsored several youth club and post-collegiate lacrosse teams. The acquisition of the Chesapeake Bayhawks created avenues to amplify the Smartlink brand nationally through collaboration with the MLL and sponsorships, in addition to forging abundant recruiting opportunities within the lacrosse community.
When Kelly was asked what the number one thing he can attribute Smartlink’s success to, his answer was simply, "our people." He explained: "We hire and empower driven and competitive professionals who aren’t afraid to shake up the norms to find a creative solution to a client need. We operate much like a professional sports team, with each team member positioned to capitalize on their individual strengths, together forming the perfect balance of knowledge and skill. We even refer to our offices internally as the Front Office (our headquarters) and our Locker Rooms (our other locations across the country)."
