The student research teams at BEACON have been busy throughout the summer, and they are welcoming the new academic year with a full portfolio of major projects.
Over the summer, BEACON teams have been assisting the Henson School's Eastern Shore GIS Cooperative (ESRGC) to develop a Workforce Development Dashboard for the governor of Oklahoma and her Workforce Development Team in Oklahoma's Department of Commerce. This dashboard is very similar to Maryland's Workforce Development Dashboard, also developed by ESRGC and BEACON. Also during the summer months, BEACON's student research teams worked on a statewide project to assess the economic implications of the State of Maryland's proposed Phosphorus Management Tool (PMT) regulations on the economy of the Chesapeake Bay and on Maryland's Agricultural Sector.
Starting in September, BEACON teams will be working with 28 different regional Strategic Industry Partnerships throughout the State of Maryland. The student teams will apply BEACON's proprietary 3E Model (Effectiveness, Efficiency and Evidence) to assess the business, economic and workforce development outcomes of each of these regional projects. Another major project underway involves the assessment of the economic costs of illicit drug use and alcohol abuse in each of the nine counties of the Eastern Shore of Maryland.
Faculty, staff and students are encouraged to stop by the BEACON Suite near the Perdue Museum on the ground floor of Perdue Hall and see the student research teams in action.
