In the Spotlight …

Henry Hunt has been selected to receive one of 2013 President’s Diversity Awards for an undergraduate student in recognition of his service and commitment to diversity on SU’s campus. His efforts to make fellow students feel welcomed and valued have been significant.

Lori Defnet has been selected as the Center for Student Achievement Scholar Holler recipient for the month of May. Scholar Holler is a program that recognizes academic excellence.

Darrell Wilson was appointed by the Governor of Maryland to the Holly Center Citizens Advisory Board on April 9. The Holly Center (Salisbury, MD) is a state residential and training center that was established in the Developmental Disabilities Administration of the Health - General Article of the Annotated Code of Maryland 

Dr. Ying Wu was invited to give a public lecture on the U.S.-China relations to the students and faculty of Department of Government and Politics and Confucius Institute at the University of Maryland College Park on April 19. Titled “Complementarity, Competition and Cooperation in U.S.-China Relations,” the lecture was well received by the audience of over 50 attendants and it was followed by an active question and answer session.

Leonard Arvi’s interview about credit unions was published on March 25 by Bankrate & Yahoo Finance, “Credit Unions Rise Likely to Continue” (http://www.bankrate.com/finance/credit-unions/credit-unions-rise-likely-to-continue.aspx) 

Wayne Decker presented a paper co-authored with Tom Calo, Hong Yao and Christy Weer at the 2013 meeting of the Eastern Academy of Management in Baltimore. The paper, “Cultural Values, Goals, and Preference for Group Work in China and the U.S.,” was also published in the meeting’s proceedings.

Mike Koval’s and Mike Garner’s paper “I Don’t Do Writing: A Model for Overcoming Faculty Resistance to Using Writing Assignments in the Classroom” was given the Best Paper Award at the annual conference of the Mid-Atlantic Academy of Legal Studies in Business in Philadelphia.

Jill L. Caviglia-Harris has been named one of the Top 25 Women Professors in Maryland (http://onlineschoolsmaryland.com/top-college-professors-in-maryland/women/) 

Jonathan Munemo’s paper “Examining Imports of Capital Goods from China as a Channel for Technology Transfer and Growth in Sub-Saharan Africa” has been accepted for publication by the Journal of African Business.

Jonathan Munemo’s paper “Business Regulations and Private Domestic Investment in Africa” in Journal of African Business, July 2012, 13 (2), has been short-listed for the 2012 Best Paper Award by the Journal of African Business 

Dick Hoffman presented a paper titled “International Franchise Expansion: The Impact of Local Business Climate,” coauthored with J. Munemo and J. Preble, at the sixth International Conference on Management Theory and Practice, Tartu, Estonia, on April 11.

Kashi Khazeh and Fati Salimian (co-authored with Bob Winder) published “Assessing Transaction Exposure Utilizing Value At Risk Approach: The Holding Period Effect” in The Journal of Current Research in Global Business, Volume 16, Number 25, pp.50-63 (Winter 2013).
