Catching Up With … Greg Tawes, Class of 2000

Greg Tawes

As the market president for BB&T, I am responsible for the bank’s overall market share for Dorchester, Wicomico, Somerset and Worcester counties in Maryland. My primary responsibilities include helping our clients achieve economic success, helping our associates grow professionally, helping to make our community a better place and ultimately increasing shareholder value. Helping to make the community a better place to live is a very rewarding part of my job. I’ve had the good fortune of helping many organizations in the community, such as Life Crisis Center, United Way, Peninsula Regional Medical Center Foundation and several others. I hold several board seats in the local non-profit community. BB&T is very supportive of these endeavors.

My education at Salisbury University left me well prepared for my career in banking. In my role, there are certainly many analytical requirements as I spend a great deal of my time focused on seeking and acquiring new commercial loan opportunities. These are real-life case studies! However, the most critical skills required in my role are the ability to effectively communicate with, negotiate with and motivate people. This is a day-to-day non-negotiable that is required for interaction with my associates, clients and contemporaries. As I continue to grow in my professional development, it is clear to me that in order to be successful in any area of my life, I have to be effective in dealing with people. My favorite books on this topic are First Things First, written by Stephen R. Covey, A. Roger and Rebecca R. Merrill, and 7 Habits of Highly Effective People, written by Stephen R. Covey.

BB&T is one of the largest financial services holding companies in the U.S. with $182.7 billion in assets and market capitalization of $23.8 billion, as of June 30, 2013. A Fortune 500 company, BB&T is consistently recognized for outstanding client satisfaction by J.D. Power and Associates, the U.S. Small Business Administration, Greenwich Associates and others.
