Estonia & Russia - Summer 2010

Interest Meeting - October 13, 2009 - 3:30 PM

CH 122

Program: This summer study program offers students a chance to experience one of the European Union’s newest and fastest growing economies, Estonia. The host university is in the heart of the city of Tartu and nearby housing will make it accessible. This three week Summer I program will run from May 24 to June 12, 2010 and it will include classes in the University of Tartu, sightsee in Tartu, a visit to Tallinn, the capital city and home of many multinational subsidiaries. Tallinn has a beautifully preserved medieval old town replete with towers and walls. We will also take a ferry and visit St. Petersburg, Russia.

Locations:  Estonia with its population of 1.4 million inhabiting the 28,000 sq. mile territory on the eastern coast of the Baltic Sea is an EU member country. Its low population density leaves ample space for wilderness forests, wetlands, and reedy coastal areas rich in nesting birds, and picturesque small islands. At the same time, schools in remote villages are equipped with computers, also over 60% of all home computers have internet access, and every second Estonian has a mobile phone. University of Tartu – was founded in 1632 and is the leading university in Estonia and one of the top universities in Northern Europe. The university offers all degrees from bachelors through doctorates. Its eleven schools offer programs as diverse as art, history, medicine, business, law, and science. Over 400 international students study at Tartu mostly from Finland, Germany, Sweden, Latvia, Russia, and the USA. Tartu – dates to 1030 and today is a city of 100,000, about one fifth are university students. Tartu has theatres, museums and clubs as well as green parks on the banks of the River Emajõgi that also has a sand beach. A sister city of Salisbury, Tartu is a highly suited place for study, research, and recreation.
