Baltimore City Mayoral Fellowship

APPLICATION DEADLINE: Monday, February 11th, 2013

The Baltimore City Mayoral Fellowship is a ten week full-time placement in a Mayoral office or agency. Fellows will be assigned to projects that focus on a myriad of public policy issues and challenges. Mayoral Fellows will complete their projects under the direction of senior level government officials and will be provided with immediate and direct feedback.  It runs from Monday, June 3 - through Thursday, August 8.

Mayoral Fellows receive stipends and are placed in agencies based on their background, interests and the needs of the agencies and departments.

The 2013 Governor's Summer Internship Program

APPLICATION DEADLINE: Monday, March 11th, 2013

The Governor's Summer Internship Program was created to introduce students to the challenges and rewards working within local and State Government.  For ten weeks, beginning June 3rd through August 9th, 2013, interns will:

  • Work on substantive projects with senior-level public administrators and policy makers, in departments or policy areas that closely correspond with each intern's field of study or career interests.  Duties often include attending meetings, drafting correspondence, tracking legislation, and researching policy options.
  • Develop policy papers that address significant issues facing Maryland today.  these papers, researched in teams, are presented to the Governor and/or other senior staff members at the end of the program.
  • Attend site visits and seminars designed to introduce interns to specific rewards and challenges of public administration.
  • Gain valuable exposure to the tremendous talents and resources of Maryland State Government while earning a $3,000 stipend.

Ongoing Internship Opportunities

Maryland Humanities Council

Description: The intern will assist the Practicing Democracy Project Manager and Program Officer on the Eastern Shore by representing MHC and the Practicing Democracy Program at a series of meetings and community events including festivals, fairs, and farmers markets.  Internship involves interacting with the public at MHC’s traveling, educational display by engaging citizens in interactive activities to garner reflection and feedback about land use and water quality issues. The intern will also assist with collecting and interpreting data and feedback collected at the events and updating social media and project facebook page.

 

AmeriCorps 

Description: ShoreCorps/PALS, the AmeriCorps Program at Salisbury University, is currently recruiting quarter-time members to serve at sites on the Eastern Shore of MD. Quarter-time members must serve at least 450 hours before September 5, 2012, or approximately 10 hours/week. Members serve at sites that work with at-risk children and youth. Benefits include a pre-tax living allowance of approximately $135 every 2 weeks, 3 undergraduate credits each in the Fall and Spring semesters in a mandatory Thursday morning class at SU, an Education Award upon the successful completion of service, and the thrill of making a difference in a young person’s life. Maryland League of Conservation Voters.

Description: The Maryland LCV and LCV Education Fund are among Maryland’s leading statewide advocacy organizations. The Villers Fellowship

The Villers Fellowship for Health Care Justice was created in 2005 by Philippe Villers, Founder and President of Families USA. Each year, the Villers Fellow works in our health policy department and assists our organization's efforts to improve access to health coverage for all Americans, especially for low-income and other vulnerable communities. Specifically, the Villers Fellow will conduct research on a range of health care policy issues, and write and contribute to publications that are relevant to health reform implementation and other health policy issues. In creating the fellowship, Mr. Villers aspired to develop a network of young leaders who share a passion for health care justice. The ideal candidate will demonstrate a commitment to health care justice work following their year as a fellow. Additionally, in order to encourage the development of future leaders, Villers Fellows must commit to mentoring at least one person over the course of their careers. The Wellstone Fellowship

The Wellstone Fellow's primary responsibilities include assisting in the organization of conferences and trainings for advocates and community leaders; drafting talking points, blogs, fact sheets, and other publications; and developing content for the Families USA website and email lists. During the year, the Fellow will learn organizing and advocacy skills about health reform implementation, Medicaid, Medicare, health equity, and other important health policy issues. At the same time, the Wellstone Fellow will develop an understanding of the tactics and strategies used in state-based consumer health advocacy organizations and will work directly with our network of state consumer health advocates and organizations. Public Service Fellows Program

Great news! The Public Service Fellows Program application is now open. Please share this exciting opportunity with your students.  The Program:  The Partnership for Public Service is seeking current students or recent graduates to join our team and contribute to our mission.  •  Are your students passionate about public service?  • Are they looking for an opportunity to develop their skills and gain valuable experience?  • Are they looking for a paid position in the heart of Washington, D.C.?  If so, please encourage them to apply for the Partnersship's Public Service Fellows Program!  We anticipate the Spring Fellows term will begin in mid-January, but start dates are flexible based on teams. Full-time fellows with undergraduate or graduate degrees will receive a $1000 per month stipend. Full-time fellows who are currently undergraduate students will receive an $800 per month stipend. Volunteer applications will also be accepted. Selection Process:  Fellowship positions are available in nine different focus areas. Recent graduates and students are eligible for the program, and they should apply for a particular position(s) based on their skills and interests. "Let's Be Shore" Wicomico County Student Internship

The Maryland Humanities Council’s Practicing Democracy program (www.mdhc.org/programs/practicing-democracy) is partnering with Salisbury University PACE (www.salisbury.edu/pace) and Positive Force Consulting (www.positiveforceconsultin.net) to conduct a dialogue event for community members in Wicomico County, MD to find common ground around preserving agriculture and protecting water quality. The process will be lead by Sustainable Delmarva (www.sustainabledelmarva.net), a project founded by Positive Force Consulting Principal Jenn Hicks that conducts community dialogue and capacity building opportunities for communities on the Delmarva Peninsula. The goal of this dialogue event is to strengthen relationships and trust among stakeholders as a way to increase their capacity to identify common ground and move ahead on issues related to agriculture and water quality on the Eastern Shore of Maryland.
Work Outline:
A student intern would help with all aspects of the planning and executing of the community dialogue event starting in June 2012. The event is slated to be held in early September 2012. The process has two major components:
Planning Committee meetings: A planning committee representing a wide range of stakeholder groups in the community will be coordinated to plan and promote the event. The committee will meet three times (June, July, and August). This includes learning about the World Café approach (www.theworldcafe.com), the meeting model the event will use, and walking through the process. The group will also determine the date, location, and name of the event. In addition, the group will determine how to invite the community so the turn out represents as many stakeholder groups as possible. Through out the planning process the group will conduct a “mini-World Café” because they will begin addressing major issues in the community in order to determine the scope of the final event. Meetings last between 1.5 and 2 hours and administrative tasks and communication with the group occurs outside of the meetings.
Student Intern tasks include:
Attending the three planning meeting and taking notes. Transcribing meeting notes and sending them to planning committee. Managing the spreadsheet with event outreach information (confirmed RSVPs, key invitees). Assisting with the preparation for the planning committee meetings. Providing feedback about the planning process
Community Dialogue Event: The final event (a name will be determined by the planning committee) will be held over a 3 to 4 hour period on a day and at a time the planning committee determines is best. For more information about the details of the event refer to the document “World Café FAQ’s”.
