ART 121- Design Principles--Sample Syllabus

INTRODUCTION: Design Principles is an introduction to the concepts and elements that are fundamental to the language of design as practiced in the fine and applied arts. The course will be divided into five units of study based upon elements and principles of design, as well as concepts and media. The course will involve readings and projects to be worked on in and out of class. The objectives of the course are:

  • To familiarize students with the formal elements of design; o To establish a working knowledge of design principles;
o To understand traditional composition strategies;
o To build sustainable idea creation skills;
  • To strengthen students’ ability to communicate ideas visually; o To document the development of the thinking process;
o To experience varieties of the creative process;
o To participate in meaningful written and oral critiques;
  • To refine craftsmanship and presentation;
o And to Understand a range of conceptual approaches reflected in contemporary visual culture.

CIVIC ENGAGEMENT ENHANCEMENT: While exploring the concepts and elements that are fundamental to the language of design as practiced in the fine and applied arts, during this course we will pay particular attention to the role art and design play in political and social change. You will read and we will discuss this role throughout the course and a culminating group project will employ art and design principles to engage with contemporary and relevant political/social issues.
