Saw Palmetto
(Serenoa repens)

General Description:   A small scrubby palm found throughout the south eastern United States

Parts Used:  Berries

Uses:

reduces symptoms of benign prostatic hypertrophy

  diuretic activity

  simulates appetite

  may enhance sexual functioning

  anti-inflammatory effects.

Action:  Antiandrogenic.  Inhibits testosterone-5-alpha reductase (no changes in testosterone plasma levels).  Alters steroid receptor levels.

Dosage:  1-2 g. or 320 mg daily (Teas are ineffective)

               Dried fruit - 1-2 g three/times/day

               Tincture - 2-4 ml twice/day

Precautions/Adverse Reactions:  No health hazards or side effects known.  Rare stomach complaints have been reported except for minimal GI upset and diarrhea

Contraindications:   Pregnancy/Lactating.   It can affect the unborn male fetus.

* Nursing Considerations:

Its mechanism of action is similar to finasteride (Proscar)   It may cause an additive effect if a patient is taking  both.

Since both Saw Palmetto and finasterde can harm the male  fetus, men should use a condom during sex since  active ingredients may be able to penetrate into the skin or semen.

Saw Palmetto does not reduce the size of an enlarged Prostrate;  therefore it is critical  to advise patients to consult a physician on a regular basis.

It can reduce PSA levels leading to a false negative test for  prostrate cancer.

Saw Palmetto should be taken with meals to avoid GI upset.
