The country of Haiti occupies one-third of the island of Hispaniola, with the other two-thirds of the island occupied by Haiti's neighbor to the west, the Dominican Republic.  Hispaniola is bordered on the north by the Atlantic ocean and on the South by the Caribbean Sea. The island nation of Cuba is to the west of Haiti.14, 15, 16The geographic area of Haiti is about 10,712 square miles, which is slightly smaller than the state of Maryland. Haiti's terrain is mostly mountainous. The climate is tropical.14, 15, 17

    2002 population data estimates Haiti's population at 7,063,722.14The 2001 population of Maryland in contrast is 5,375,156.18 There are roughly 659 people per square mile in Haiti, while there are 30 people per square mile in the U.S.19, and 542 people per square mile in Maryland, indicating a relatively high population density in this small country.20 Haiti is the poorest nation in the western hemisphere.14,15, 21 The per capita Gross Domestic Income (GDI) in 2001 was $480 22 compared to a 2000 GDI in the U. S. of $34,100.23
