Purpose of the Academy

The Eastern Shore Faculty Academy and Mentorship Initiative (ES-FAMI), a collaborative effort among the Departments of Nursing at Salisbury University, Chesapeake College and Sojourner-Douglass College, will prepare experienced BS and MS-prepared registered nurses for new roles as part-time clinical nursing faculty. The lack of qualified nursing faculty is a concern among nursing schools across the nation, particularly those who are culturally and ethnically diverse. The academy will create a ‘registry’ of diverse candidates who complete the program, and the participating nursing schools may employ the qualified clinical faculty to teach part-time in their programs.

ES FAMI StudentsThis 30 contact-hour program involves on-line instruction, as well as, a face-to-face introductory session, simulated clinical teaching sessions, and mentoring workshops. Academy attendees will learn: the expectations of clinical faculty; how to design and manage experiences in the clinical setting; and principles of evaluating student performance and providing feedback. The attendees will also be given opportunities for mentorships and networking with other health professionals. Attendees will receive a generous stipend. Upon completion of the academy, attendees will be expected to teach at least one clinical section per year for a two year period as needed.

Upon completion of the Eastern Shore Faculty and Mentorship Initiative, Academy attendees will be able to:

  1. Apply the principles of teaching/learning to various types of student learners in the clinical setting.
  2. Participate in on line discussions regarding aspects of teaching in the clinical setting and complete projects which involve on line activities.
  3. Describe the role of the part-time clinical educator in the clinical setting.
  4. Structure learning experiences in a clinical setting, as well as, devise an alternative plan for student clinical experience should the need arise.
  5. Plan and implement valuable pre-clinical and post-clinical experiences and conferences.
  6. Provide constructive feedback to nursing students in a clinical setting.
  7. Implement strategies to manage challenging students in a clinical setting.
  8. Participate in discussion groups about their teaching experiences during mentorship workshops.
  9. Participate in high fidelity simulated patient care experiences and assess performance of both students and faculty in the simulated setting.
  10. Discuss potential legal implications of role as a clinical educator.
  11. Integrate current evidence into clinical teaching practice.
