Filmed over a three-year period, this movie follows renowned artist Vik Muniz as he journeys from his home in Brooklyn to his native Brazil and the world’s largest garbage dump, Jardim Gramacho. There, he photographs an eclectic band of “catadores” — self-designated pickers of recyclable materials — who begin to re-imagine their lives while creating images of themselves out of trash.

The Academy Award-nominated film received the Audience Award for Best World Cinema Documentary at Sundance and quickly became a top choice on the independent film circuit. It earned additional honors at the Berlin Film Festival and International Environmental Film Fest, among others. Its first SU screening took place last semester as part of the Brazilian Groove Film Series.

Waste Land is a New York Times “Critics’ Pick.” The New York Post calls it “fascinating.” The Los Angeles Times hails it as “profoundly moving” and “a beautiful film.”

Sponsored by the Office of Cultural Affairs, admission is free and the public is invited. For more information call 410-543-6271 or visit the SU Web site at www.salisbury.edu.
