Biotech Entrepreneur Chirikjian speaks at SU December 4

Some people have described Dr. Jack Chirikjian as a “serial entrepreneur.” The scientist has started five biotechnology businesses and is open to the possibility of more. The professor of biochemistry at Georgetown University Medical Center’s School of Medicine shares his expertise with Salisbury University students and the greater community during the talk “From Concepts of Biology to the Business of Biotechnology” 4 p.m. Thursday, December 4, in Henson Science Hall Room 243. A pre-event reception is 3:30 p.m. in Room 213.

'Gospel at Colonus' Auditions Set December 6 and 9

Members of the local community are invited to audition for  the critically acclaimed musical theatre work, The Gospel at Colonus, to be performed spring semester at Salisbury University. Auditions are Saturday, December 6, from noon-2 p.m., and Tuesday, December 9, from 7-9 p.m., in Fulton Hall Room 130.  Robert Smith of SU’s new Department of Theatre and Dance directs, with musical direction by John Wesley Wright of the Department of Music.

SU Chorale Inaugurates SU Music Festival December 7

The Salisbury University Chorale inaugurates SU’s annual holiday music festival, “Sing, Swing and Santa,” 4:30 p.m. Sunday, December 7, in Holloway Hall Auditorium. Conducted by Dr. William Folger, director of choral studies at SU, selections include traditional favorites such as “Ava Maria” and “Silent Night,” along with Renaissance-inspired pieces “If You Love Me” and Victoria’s “O Magnum Mysterium,” folk-inspired pieces including Niles’ “I Wonder as I Wander” and two traditional Spanish carols.

SU Hosts Renaissance Madrigal Dinner December 5-6

Madrigal DinnerLord Merrick of Salisbury invites the community to join him during Salisbury University’s Renaissance Madrigal Dinner 6:30 p.m. Friday-Saturday, December 5-6, in the Bistro of the Commons.
Jesters, musicians, dancers and more entertain guests during the seven-course dinner, recreating a traditional Renaissance holiday feast.

SU Students Place First in Goodman Accounting Challenge

When it comes to accounting, Salisbury University students are No. 1 in the region. And also No. 4. Two teams from SU recently took first and fourth place in the annual Goodman Accounting Challenge. Salisbury has hosted at least one team in the finals each year it has participated, representing 10 of the top 25 teams in the past five years.

SU Hosts 'Guitars in the Classroom' Program

This fall, classroom teachers on the Eastern Shore are the first in Maryland to participate in the national Guitars in the Classroom (GITC) program. Dr. Diana Wagner of SU’s Education Specialties Department has been working with the national GITC headquarters in California to start a program for  local teachers. As a result, SU is hosting Maryland’s first GITC program this semester.

U.S. News & World ReportSalisbury University students returning to campus next month have something to celebrate–the University is again ranked among the top schools in 2009 national college guidebooks. In U.S. News & World Report and The Princeton Review, SU places high among its peers. For the 12th consecutive year, SU was named one of U.S. News' Top Public Universities—Master’s category (North). Ranked at No. 7, SU maintains its status as the highest-placing public Master’s-level university in Maryland.

SU Continues Sustainability Initiatives

When it comes to sustainability initiatives, there’s strength in numbers. That’s one reason why Salisbury University President Janet Dudley-Eshbach joined more than 400 other college and university leaders across the nation in the fight against global warming by signing the American College and University Presidents Climate Commitment. With her signature, Dudley-Eshbach pledged to move SU toward climate neutrality, with no net greenhouse gas emissions.  SU will reduce its emissions and accelerate awareness efforts needed to help the local community, and the broader society, re-stabilize the earth’s climate.

SU SAT-Optional Pilot Study Yielding Positive Results

Salisbury University has the first results from its five-year pilot study making the SAT optional for freshmen with outstanding high school records, and administrators are smiling. The GPA and credits earned after one semester are slightly higher for the test-optional group that the test-submitted group, and their first semester,  a greater percentage of test-optional students earned GPAs at or above minimum standards compared to test-submitted freshmen.

Healthy U Opens New Home at SU

Ribbon cuttingSalisbury University just got a little healthier. Healthy U of Delmarva opened its new home at 103 Power Street during a ribbon-cutting ceremony Tuesday, March 4. Healthy U officially became part of SU’s affiliated community outreach network at the beginning of this year. Founded in 2002 by civic leader Mitzi Perdue, Healthy U takes a community approach to better living through diet, exercise and other habits. [photos]

Emergency Notification Registration Available for Campus Community

As part of ongoing efforts to ensure the safety of the campus community, Salisbury University has implemented an emergency notification system that sends text and voice messages in the event of an emergency.  Students, faculty and staff must register to receive the emergency alerts.
