Writers-on-the-Shore Series Begins February 15
SALISBURY, MD---Salisbury State University English professor and internationally recognized poet Michael Waters will present a reading from his new book as part of the University’s Writers-on-the-Shore Series.
The series will include presentations from eight authors as part of the University’s Spring Literary Festival.
Waters will read from his new book, Parthenopi: New and Selected Poems (BOA Editions, 2001), Thursday, February 15, at 8 p.m. in the Montgomery Room of the Commons. The festival will run through May.
Waters’ other publications include Green Ash, Red Maple, Black Gum (BOA Editions, 1997), Bountiful (Carnegie Mellon UP, 1992) and The Burden Lifters (Carnegie Mel1on UP, 1989).
The Salisbury poet and author has published seven volumes of poetry and been in residencies at numerous national and international creative art centers. He also has co-edited several poetry anthologies, including Contemporary American Poetry (Houghton Mifflin, 2001) and Perfect in Their Art: Poems on Boxing from Homer to Ali (Southern Illinois UP, 2002).
Waters has received awards from the National Endowment for the Arts and the Maryland State Arts Council, several Pushcart Prizes, and has been invited to read his poems throughout the world, including Athens, Baghdad, Bucharest, London and Prague.
All of the Writers-on-the-Shore readings are free and open to the public. There will be a reception following each. The series is sponsored by the Department of English, the Fulton School Visiting Speaker and Artist Fund, Multiethnic Student Services, Mid-Atlantic Review, the departments of Communication Arts, History, Political Science and Sociology, and The Writers Center in cooperation with the Maryland State Arts Council and the Lila Wallace Readers Digest Fund.

Tim O’Brien-Wicomico Room of the Guerrieri University Center, Wednesday, March 7, at 7 p.m. O’Brien, National Book Award winner, published a memoir, If I Die in a Combat Zone (1973), several works of fiction, including Northern Lights (1975) and The Things They Carried (1990).
Shara McCallum-Montgomery Room of the Commons, Tuesday, March 13, at 8 p.m. McCallum was raised in Jamaica and the U.S. by Afro-Jamaican and Venezuelan parents. Her book, The Water Between Us (University of Pittsburgh Press, 1999), was the recipient of the 1998 Agnes Lynch Starrett Poetry Prize.
Li-Young Lee-Montgomery Room of the Commons, Monday, April 9, at 8 p.m. Born in 1957 in Jakarta, Indonesia, of Chinese parents, Lee has published a memoir, The Winged Seed (1995), and two volumes of poetry, including The City in Which I Love You (1990).
Jenny Jochens-Fulton Hall 111, Wednesday, April 18, at 8 p.m. Author of Women in Old Norse Society (1995) and Old Norse Images of Women (1996), Jochens will lecture on "Two Icelandic Millennia: the Conversion to Christianity and the Discovery of Vinland."
Cary Holladay - Montgomery Room of the Commons, Thursday, April 26, at 8 p.m. Holladay has published two books of short fiction: The People Down South (1989) and The Palace of Wasted Footsteps (1998).
There will be a reading from Mid-Atlantic Review on Thursday, May 3, in the Montgomery Room of the Commons at 8 p.m. SSU student poets and fiction writers read from their work to celebrate the publication of the inaugural issue of the Mid-Atlantic Review (formerly Scarab). Free copies of the magazine will be available.
Albert Goldbarth-Montgomery Room of the Commons, Thursday, May 10, at 8 p.m. Goldbarth’s books of poetry and essays include Jan. 31 (1974 National Book Award Finalist) and Original Light: New & Selected Poems 1973-1983 (1983).
