Whitehead Earns Charles W. Willis School Board Award

SALISBURY, MD---Dr. George I. Whitehead III is the winner of the 2004 Maryland Association of Boards of Education’s Charles W. Willis Award for outstanding school board service. Whitehead, a psychology professor at Salisbury University, received the award at the MABE President’s dinner during a conference September 30.

Whitehead is the project director for ShoreCorps/PALS (Partnership for Adolescence on the Lower Shore), an organization which serves at-risk youth through mentoring and tutoring programs at SU.

He also co-founded the Eastern Shore Institute for the Advancement of Thinking, a group that unites K-12 schools and universities in the area of advancing thinking. In addition, Whitehead chairs Salisbury’s Promise, a steering committee, which attended the President’s Summit for America’s Future.

Other awards include the Regents’ Faculty Award—the highest honor bestowed on faculty by the University System of Maryland—as well as the Governor’s Trailblazer Award for introducing a method of assisting in job placement for welfare-to-work recipients.

Aside from serving as project director for two grants from the Corporation of National Services, Whitehead also conducts research in the areas of defensive distancing and modern and traditional American presidents. Other academic areas of interest are social psychology, environmental psychology, statistics and service learning.

Whitehead earned an undergraduate degree from Trinity College, as well as a master’s from Long Island University’s C.W. Post campus and a doctorate from the University of Massachusetts.
