U.S. Navy Commander Speaks on 'Militant Islamic Ideology' Monday, September 17

Youssef Aboul-EneinSALISBURY, MD---As a top advisor at the Joint Intelligence Task Force for Combating Terrorism, U.S. Navy Commander Youssef Aboul-Enein is considered one of the nation’s leading counter-terrorism experts.

He speaks on “Militant Islamic Ideology: Political Radicalization of Faith” 7 p.m. Monday, September 17, in the Worcester Room of Salisbury University’s Commons. A reception precedes his talk at 6:30 p.m.

During his talk, Aboul-Enein highlights how militant Islamist ideology weaves fragments of Islamic history and theology into a narrow, pseudo-intellectual ideal to justify violence against both Muslims and non-Muslims. This creates a threat that is much different and distinct from the wider religion of Islam, he said.

Aboul-Enein is the author of several books, including Militant Islamist Ideology: Understanding the Global Threat, Iraq in Turmoil: Historical Perspectives of Dr. Ali Al-wardi, from the Ottoman Empire to King Feisal and Islamic Rulings on Warfare.

Sponsored by the Department of Military Science U.S. Army ROTC at SU and the University’s Institute for Public Affairs and Civic Engagement (PACE), admission is free and the public is invited. For more information call 410-677-5045 or visit the SU Web site at www.salisbury.edu.
