Trip Teaches Students About European Culture

SALISBURY, MD---Salisbury University’s Dr. G. Ray Thompson, professor of history and German lecturer Klaudia Thompson led a summer class traveling through Italy, Austria and Germany studying major sites and events that shaped the Roman world and left an enduring classical heritage which survives visibly in these countries today.

After a week in Italy, the class journeyed north of the Alps to examine the still-extant Roman sites in Germany and Austria that illustrate clearly the surviving Roman legacy.

The group also was invited to a private session with the Oberbuegermeisterin (Lord Mayor) Gabriele Bauer of Rosenheim, Germany. Bauer is the first female mayor of Roseheim, the campus base in Germany for the traveling class.

Students took on-site examinations, wrote daily journals and performed cultural mapping of the sites they saw during their month-long stay. Students enrolled in a three-credit history course and a one-credit German course or a three-credit German culture course. This program has been offered during alternating summers at SU.
