Transfer Scholarships Provide Opportunities at SU

SALISBURY, MD---Each semester students from community colleges on the Eastern Shore find the opportunities at Salisbury University they need to continue their education beyond the associate’s degree level.  Scholarships often provide these opportunities.

Rebecca Bigelow, a junior education major, transferred to SU from Chesapeake College in Wye Mills, MD, in the fall semester and is now finding that her education is “beyond expectation.”  A native of Chestertown, MD, Bigelow had only been a part-time student. Now because of the Regents’ Transfer Scholarship offered by the University System of Maryland, she is able to attend college full-time.

“I was so excited by this new freedom that I signed up for 18 credits in the fall semester and then went on to take a class during the winter semester, which would have been out of the question without a scholarship,” she said.  She recently was named to the Dean’s List for the fall semester.

Salisbury native Liesel Booker transfered to SU from Wor-Wic Community College in the fall thanks to the Shore Scholarship.  “SU has diverse course offerings in my major, which is creative writing,” Booker said.  “Getting the Shore Scholarship was a big psychological boost for me.” Booker’s family has undergone significant financial strain, but Booker is now able to pursue her dream of becoming a writer. 

Next fall the Maryland Higher Education Commission and SU add two more scholarships designed to help students transferring from two-year colleges: the Distinguished Scholar Community College Transfer Program scholarship and the Community College Transfer Scholarship.  “These scholarships are sure to bring even more students in to the university who need the extra assistance to complete their education,” said Gary Grodzicki, associate dean of admissions at SU.
