Tornado Watch Issued for Wicomico and Surrounding Areas

The National Weather Service has issued a tornado watch until 8 p.m. for Wicomico County and surrounding areas. A tornado watch means that atmospheric conditions are favorable for development of tornado activity.
As University Police becomes aware of further developments, it will continue to update the campus community.

SALISBURY, MD---The Salisbury University Police Department has received the following update from the Wicomico County Department of Emergency Services regarding impeding Tropical Storm Andrea:
Rainfall is the main threat from the storm, with 3-4 inches expected, and isolated areas of up to 6 inches of rainfall possible. The heaviest rain is beginning Friday morning, continuing into Friday evening. The heaviest band of rain is expected to set up along a track across North east North Carolina and will include the Eastern Shore of Maryland. There is a flood watch in effect until midnight Friday. Minor to moderate flooding is likely in poor-drainage and low-lying areas Friday. The heavy rainfall may cause small streams and creeks to rise out of their banks, overflowing low lying roads. Wind speeds of 20-25 mph sustained and gusts of 30-35 M.P.H. will occur. Tidal anomalies of around 6-12 inches are expected.
There is an isolated risk of tornadoes from mid-morning Friday into Friday afternoon.
The following high tides for Salisbury and Whitehaven are during the heaviest portions of rainfall:
- Salisbury: 3:40 p.m. Friday and 3:55 a.m. Saturday
- Whitehaven: 2:45 p.m. Friday and 3 a.m. Saturday

- Whitehaven: 2:45 p.m. Friday and 3 a.m. Saturday

SALISBURY, MD---The Salisbury University Police Department is communicating with the Wicomico County Department of Emergency Services in preparation for Tropical Storm Andrea’s effect on the area. The following is the most recent forecast provided:
Rainfall is the main threat from the storm with 3-5 inches expected and isolated areas of up to 6 inches possible. The rain will start Thursday evening, with the heaviest rain beginning early Friday morning and continuing into Friday evening. Minor to moderate flooding is likely in poor-drainage and low-lying areas Friday. Wind gusts of 35-45 mph are expected mainly in areas along the bay, rivers and beaches. Tidal anomalies of about six inches are expected.
