Three Receive Nursing Scholarships

SALISBURY, MD---Three area students have received the Virginia Mills Edwards Nursing Scholarship and the Margaret Johnson Elmore Scholarship for the 2003-04 academic year at Salisbury University.

The Department of Nursing in the Henson School of Science and Technology has selected Jenna Sterling of Crisfield, MD, and Angela Kukta of Vienna, MD, as recipients of the Edwards scholarship. Justin Somers of Crisfield, MD, received the Elmore scholarship.

Sterling and Kukta will be seniors in the traditional track of the baccalaureate nursing program this fall, while Somers enters the nursing program as a freshman.

“All these students were selected based on the belief that they possess the exceptional qualifications, aptitude and potential for outstanding careers in nursing,” said Mary DiBartolo, Nursing Department scholarship coordinator.

The Edwards scholarship is awarded annually to a nursing major who exhibits a desire to become a registered nurse. Priority is given to Dorchester County residents, but applicants from the Lower Eastern Shore are considered. Recipients receive up to $1,000.

The Elmore scholarship is for $2,000 per year up to four years and is available to residents of the Eastern Shore of Virginia who meet the academic criteria. Second priority is for students from Somerset or Wicomico counties.

Established in 1990, the award is presented in honor of the late Margaret Elmore Johnson by her son, D. Page Elmore, and his wife, Carolyn. A 54-year resident of Painter, VA, Mrs. Elmore devoted her life to the nursing profession.
