Third Bellavance Intern Award Presented

SALISBURY, MD---Salisbury Univeristy senior Brian Young of Bel Air, MD, is this year’s recipient of the Thomas E. Bellavance Intern Award, given annually by SU’s Institute for Public Affairs and Civic Engagement (PACE).

Given to an upperclassman who has demonstrated a commitment to civic engagement and the public good, the award provides the intern with the opportunity to interact with government officials and play an integral role in PACE’s public affairs. The honor is made possible by a donation from the family of the University’s sixth president, Dr. Thomas E. Bellavance.

Young, the third student to receive the award, holds a double major in political science and history. Active in his community since age 6, he has been involved in civic engagement ranging from his service as an Eagle Scout to his work in the office of U.S. Representative Wayne T. Gilchrest and Maryland Delegate Barry Glassman. His leadership experience and past volunteer work include founding the Union for Community Action at SU in fall 2002.

“There are many concerns that I have with government and local, state, national and international affairs today,” Young said. “With these concerns, however, I see a great potential for improvement and good.”

Dr. Francis Kane, co-director of PACE, commended Young’s commitment to community engagement.

“Brian brings a wealth of experience in the political arena with him,” he said. “He will be a stellar addition to PACE’s projects and programs.”
