Spring 'Learn with SU' Series Begins March 3

SALISBURY, MD---It’s been one year since Salisbury University first launched “Learn with SU”and the popular lifelong learning series continues to grow.

Spring classes have just been announced and there’s something for everyone.  From a Thai cooking class to a sneak peek behind the scenes at Public Radio Delmarva, SU explores subjects of interest to Delmarva residents age 50 and over. Courses are offered on campus and in the Maryland and Delaware beach communities.

“This is our most expansive series yet and we are thrilled to offer 12 classes on a wide-range of topics,” said coordinator Amy Waters, SU’s director of leadership giving and stewardship. “Not only are our presenters SU faculty and staff, they’re also alumni and local community business owners who have volunteered to share their expertise. A network of returning participants is developing, but it’s always nice to see new faces, too!”

The series kicks off Monday, March 3, with the chance to join a book club that will read David Gergen’s Eyewitness to Power: The Essence of Leadership, Nixon to Clinton. Another club delves into Elizabeth Gilbert’s Eat, Pray, Love:  One Women’s Search for Everything Across Italy, India and Indonesia.

Later in the month, those trying to stay healthy may explore “Living with Diabetes and Eating Well” and “Managing Heart Disease and High Cholesterol.”  For a more active approach to fitness, try disc golf at the 18-hole Schumaker Pond course, or rejuvenate the mind, body and spirit through pilates and yoga at Healthy U of Delmarva.

Returning presenters include Theresa Pyle of Blossoms, Inc. who teaches the basics of making beautiful spring flower arrangements. Brent Kenney of Grist Mill Gardens, Inc. provides tips on creating a beautiful flower garden, year after year. And just in time for spring, Dr. Ellen Lawler of SU’s Biology Department, shares local bird-watching hot spots!

Other participants may enjoy “Jazz Appreciation” with Public Radio Delmarva General Manager Gerry Weston. Or for those concerned about rising gas prices and heating bills, SU energy expert Dr. Piet de Witt examines the U.S. energy situation during “Energy: A View from 50,000 Feet.”
