Small Speaks During American Heritage Week Workshop

SALISBURY, MD--Dr. Clara L. Small, professor of history in the Fulton School of Liberal Arts at Salisbury University, recently lead the lecture “African American History” during the "Beach to the Bay: Celebrating the Eastern Shore Way" American Heritage Week workshop at NASA’s Goddard Space Flight Facility in Wallops Island, VA. Small has published several papers, including "Abolitionists, Free Blacks and Runaway Slaves," which was included in the book A History of African-Americans on Maryland’s and Delaware’s Eastern Shore. She researches Eastern Shore African-American history using oral history, official documents, and other sources. In addition, Small serves on the Governor’s Task Force on Slavery.                              The lecture discussed the lives and lifestyles of abolitionists, free blacks and runaway slaves who lived in colonial Maryland and Virginia over 300 years ago. Topics of discussion included free blacks entering into lawful marriages, owned property and community participation.
