Saxophonist Gary Louie Joins SSO Mid-Winter Concert March 8

Gary LouieSALISBURY, MD---Guest saxophonist Gary Louie joins the Salisbury Symphony Orchestra at Salisbury University during the SSO’s annual Mid-Winter Concert 8 p.m. Saturday, March 8, in Holloway Hall Auditorium.

Known for his collaborations and appearances with orchestras nationwide, Louie is featured on Glazunov’s Saxophone Concerto. Other pieces in the program include Rossini’s La Gazza Ladra (The Thieving Magpie), Liszt’s Les Preludes and Respighi’s Gli Uccelli (The Birds).

“Gary Louie is a musician’s musician,” said Dr. Jeffrey Schoyen, symphony conductor. “He’s at the top of his field.”

A native of Washington, D.C., Louie has been compared to musicians Richard Stoltzman and Heinz Holliger for popularizing the artistic expressiveness of the saxophone as they did for the clarinet and oboe, respectively.

Heard throughout the United States on National Public Radio and Public Television, Louie has also appeared on Spanish National Radio and Radio France. Recent performances have included Milhaund’s La creation du monde and other pieces with the Baltimore Symphony and Ohio Chamber orchestras. He also played with the Washington Chamber Symphony and National Chamber Orchestra at the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts in Washington, D.C.

Recording with the National Philharmonic and Manhattan Chamber Orchestra, he has played at many of the world’s most prestigious venues, including Alice Tully Hall at the Lincoln Center for the Performing Arts in New York, L’Opera Comique in Paris and the Villa Medici in Rome. International performances have included appearances throughout Spain with the St. Petersburg Symphony and in Germany with the Philharmonisches Orchester Augsburg under the baton of Peter Leonard.

Admission to the SSO concert is $20 for adults, $15 for senior citizens and SU faculty and staff, and $5 for non-SU students and children 12 and under. SU student ID holders are admitted free.
