SU Selected for ACE Internationalization Laboratory Cohort

ACE Internationalization Laboratory Cohort site visitSALISBURY, MD---Salisbury University is one of 13 colleges and universities nationwide participating in the American Council on Education’s (ACE’s) 13th Internationalization Laboratory Cohort. SU applied for membership and was selected for participation based on the strength of its international initiatives.

Dr. Barbara Hill, senior associate for internationalization at ACE, recently visited SU’s campus on the first of two official site visits that are part of the program. Hill met with leaders across campus to discuss SU’s ongoing international initiatives.

The project will continue through calendar year 2016. SU will assess its ongoing efforts and develop strategies and goals for further campus internationalization. This will include forming leadership teams to work on strategic planning and student outcomes, attending cohort meetings in Washington, participating in site visits and peer reviews, engaging in monthly communication with ACE staff and working with faculty to encourage considering international perspectives as part of various programs.

SU President Janet Dudley-Eshbach created the Center for International Education in spring 2006. Over the past decade, SU has doubled the number of students who study abroad, tripled the number of international students on campus, created a Visiting Global Scholar program to host visiting professors from around the world, and founded an English Language Institute that has enrolled students from five continents.

“The ACE Internationalization Laboratory is a unique opportunity for SU to assess the progress it has made in internationalizing our learning community over the past 10 years and to plan for our future growth around the world during the next 10 years,” according to Dr. Brian Stiegler, assistant provost for international education at SU.

“This is a tremendous opportunity for these institutions to share lessons and challenges as they continue a cultural transformation,” said Hill.

Since 2002, 105 institutions have participated in the program. Other institutions in the 13th Internationalization Laboratory Cohort include: California State University, Hofstra University (NY), Miami University of Ohio, Northern Illinois University and Syracuse University (NY).
