SU Purchases Shoreland Inc. Property For Future Expansion

SALISBURY, MD---In its first major land acquisition in several years, Salisbury University has purchased nearly 9.5 acres of land formerly owned by Shoreland Inc. at the corner of South Division and Bateman streets.  The land is contiguous to the campus Athletic Fields and the parking area the University is leasing from Dresser Inc.  The Shoreland property is also in close proximity to the pedestrian underpass connecting the Main and East campuses.  The purchase price was $6.2 million.

“Expanding the physical campus in a manner that protects our surrounding residential neighborhoods has been, and remains, an important objective” said SU President Janet Dudley-Eshbach.  “The Main Campus (bounded by U.S. Route 13, Dogwood Drive and Camden and College avenues) will remain the academic core of Salisbury University, but additional land has been needed for parking, recreation, auxiliary services and, in general, future growth.”

Dudley-Eshbach thanked Art Cooley, owner of Shoreland Inc.; the University System of Maryland and the USM Board of Regents; Governor Robert L. Ehrlich Jr. and the Maryland Board of Public Works; and SU Vice President Greig Mitchell for making the acquisition possible.

“Our dreams for the future become reality through small steps such as this property acquisition,” she said.

The expansion of the campus, coupled with the beginning of construction activity at the corner of College Avenue and Route 13, underscore an on-going transformation of the physical campus.
