SU Professors Publish Management Article

SALISBURY, MD---Drs. Frank Shipper, Joel Kincaid, Denise M. Rotondo and Richard C. Hoffman IV of the Franklin P. Perdue School of Business at Salisbury University have written an article entitled “A Cross-Cultural Exploratory Study of the Linkage between Emotional Intelligence and Managerial Effectiveness,” which has been accepted for publication in the International Journal of Organizational Analysis.

According to Shipper, the article addresses the “relationship between emotional intelligence (EI) and managerial effectiveness among three cultures.”  Shipper and his team studied the effects of interpersonal and  leadership skills at multinational firm locations in the United States, the United Kingdom and Malaysia. 

The study showed that emotional intelligence, the self-awareness of managers in relation to employer-employee relations, is positively connected to managerial effectiveness.  Results further indicate that self-awareness and interpersonal skills are more strongly correlated in Western nations, such as the United States, where a fluid class system dominates business and economics.  In Eastern nations, such as Malaysia, where business depends on the rigidity of the class system, self-awareness has a greater correlation to leadership skills.  The article concludes with a discussion of the influences of these findings on future research.
