SU Holds Annual Multicultural Festival April 27-30
SALISBURY, MD---The Salisbury University Office of Multicultural Student Services sponsors Multicultural Festival Week Monday-Thursday, April 27-30. This year’s theme is “A Kaleidoscope of Culture.”
Events begin with a performance by the Quest: Arts For Everyone Deaf Acting Troupe 2 p.m. Monday in the Wicomico Room of the Guerrieri University Center. The non-profit theatre company has toured the world to promote global understanding through cultural and theatre arts. Their SU performance is co-sponsored by the Office of Student Disabilities Services.
Toby Foyeh and Orchestra Africa continues the series 8 p.m. Tuesday, April 28, in the Wicomico Room. An accomplished African guitarist, Foyeh has been a major ambassador of African music for years, producing several successful bands and pioneering the preservation of African musical heritage. Orchestra African come to SU following a European tour in March. Its performance is co-sponsored by the African Student Association and Student Organization for Activity Planning.
An assortment of performers takes over University Hill (beside the Guerrieri University Center) and Pergola during Multicultural Festival Day 11:30 a.m.-3 p.m. Wednesday. Acts include the Keith Marks Jazz Quartet, Steel Kings Jamaican Steel Band, Chilean folksinger Isabel Umanzor and Muskrat Sally. Student groups performing include the SU Gospel choir, Step Squad, Untouchables Dance Inc., Holy Hip Hop and Oduru Amigos. Student groups and local vendors are showcased during the event, and cultural food samples will be available.
The Diversity Office hosts its annual Diversity Awards ceremony immediately following the festival at 3 p.m. in the Montgomery Room of the Commons. The awards promote the importance of diversity through involvement in the campus community.
University Dining Services and the Cultural Affairs Office present a Caribbean dinner in the Commons Bistro from 4:30-6:30 that evening. Featuring the Steel Kings, the cost of the meal is $9.68 for adults, $5.95 for children ages 6-12. Children under 5 dine free. Reservations are not required.

Other upcoming multicultural activities on campus include a meeting of the Maryland Commission on Indian Affairs 7:30-9 p.m. Monday, May 4, in the Worcester Room of the Commons. Tentative discussion topics include education and census issues. Scheduled presentations include the repatriation, education and sweat lodge committees. The public is invited.
The commission hosts capacity-building workshop for the Native American community and the general public 9 a.m.-3 p.m. Saturday, May 9, in the Wicomico Room of the Guerrieri University Center. Concurrent topics covered during the training include workforce development, healthcare, finding and applying for grants, educational opportunities and college preparation, foreclosure and mortgage information, child support and energy assistance. Admission is free, but pre-registration is required.
