SALISBURY, MD---Salisbury University’s Fall Convocation has been rescheduled for 4 p.m. Tuesday, September 6, in Red Square (rain location: Maggs Physical Activities Center).

The event was postponed from August 26 due to preparations for Hurricane Irene.

A celebration of the opening of the academic year, Convocation provides an opportunity to recognize the achievements of first-year students and to encourage all to reflect on the meaning of a college education. The colorful ceremony, for the campus community, includes faculty in academic regalia and traditionally serves as a welcome for new students.

This year’s guest speaker is author Jennifer Thompson, whose book, Picking Cotton: Our Memoir of Injustice and Redemption, is the 2011 New Student Reader at SU.

Co-authored with Ronald Cotton and Erin Torneo, the New York Times bestseller tells the story of Thompson and Cotton’s unlikely friendship. After Thompson mistakenly indentified Cotton as the man who raped her at knifepoint, he served more than a decade in prison. Two years after he was exonerated by DNA evidence, they met, and the experience changed their lives.
