SU Dance Company Annual Spring Concert April 26-29
SALISBURY, MD---Guest choreographers and a piece by the legendary Bob Fosse highlight the Salisbury University Dance Company’s annual Spring Concert 8 p.m. Wednesday-Saturday, April 26-29, in Holloway Hall Auditorium.
Directed by Dr. Victoria Hutchinson, the program of six works features Fosse’s I Wanna Be A Dancin’ Man and soloist Gesel Mason, whom The Washington Post calls “one of the area’s wittiest and most perceptive dance-essayists” with “a high level of technical control, dramatic intensity and even physical courage ... simply excellent.”
Mason performs Bent from No Boundaries, a solo project that celebrates the style and vision of the nation’s leading contemporary African-American choreographers. Her presenters include the Walker Arts Center in Minneapolis and the Kennedy Center. Bent is choreographed by Jawole Willa Jo Zollar, the artistic director and founder of Urban Bush Women, a performance ensemble dedicated to exploring the use of cultural expression as a catalyst for social change.
Guest choreographer Lynne Mariani returns to adapt and re-stage a second acclaimed Fosse work with the company. I Wanna Be A Dancin’ Man which Fosse dedicated to Fred Astaire, premiered in Dancin’ on Broadway in 1978. Mariani began her professional career in Fosse’s Dancin’, where she recreated the role of Ann Reinking and served as dance captain for Fosse.
Faculty instructor Mary Norton premieres D?j? Vu, a contemporary ballet set to the music of Miles Davis, the “Picasso of Jazz.”
The gospel spiritual “Wading in the Water” is the backdrop for Wade, a modern dance by returning guest choreographer Stephanie Powell. She received the prestigious Lehman Award in 2001 and teaches on the dance faculty of Towson University.
Guest choreographer Dylan Pearce returns to premiere Embark, a tribute to the Company’s graduating seniors.
The adjudicated winner of the 2005 Fall Student Dance Showcase, The Beat, is an explosive jam session of tap dance and live percussion conceived by junior Sara Greaver and drummer Alan Krill.
Admission for the one-hour performance is $8 for adults and $6 for senior citizens, teens and SU alumni. Children under 12 and SU ID receive one free ticket. Reservations are not required. Tickets are available at the door 30 minutes before curtain.
The concert benefits the Lauren March Fund, which seeks donations to cover the medical expenses March, a Mardela Middle and High School student in a coma at Johns Hopkins Hospital after suffering critical injuries in a car accident.
