SU Commemorates Disability History and Awareness Month in October

Student Disability Support ServicesSALISBURY, MD---Salisbury University commemorates Disability History and Awareness Month with a series of events in October.

A screening of the documentary Sound and Fury inaugurates the series 3 p.m. Wednesday, October 17, in Teacher Education and Technology Center Room 156. The film follows two families as they struggle to decide whether a cochlear implant, which can assist hearing-impaired individuals, is best for their children. While the implant may allow them to hear, it also potentially threatens their identifying with the hearing-impaired culture. The public is invited.

Nikki Dyer, SU Student Disability Support Services coordinator, hosts the faculty and staff brown bag lunch discussion “Disabilities Inside and Outside of the Classroom” at noon Tuesday, October 23, in the Pocomoke Room of the Guerrieri University Center.

Events culminate with a disability workshop with staff from the Holly Community, Inc. 3 p.m. Wednesday, October 31, in the Pocomoke Room. Speakers provide information on disability history, law and assistive technology. The public is invited.

Sponsored by the offices of Diversity and Student Disability Support Services, and the Disability History and Awareness Month Planning Committee, admission to all Disability Awareness and History Month events at SU is free. For more information call 410-677-6536 or visit the SU Web site at
