SU Celebrates Homecomingand Family Day Sept. 30-Oct. 1

SALISBURY, MD---From a block party and parade to athletics and reunions, Salisbury University’s 2005 Homecoming and Family Day are packed with excitement for families, students and alumni alike from Friday-Saturday, September 30-October 1.

Events begin Friday, September 30. Daytime highlights include a four-person scramble golf tournament at 2 p.m. at Nutters Crossing Golf Course. On campus, a powderpuff football game sponsored by the Residence Hall Association begins at 3 p.m. on the Holloway Hall Lawn.

The SU Athletics Hall of Fame inducts three new members during its annual banquet (6 p.m. in the Wicomico Room of the Guerrieri University Center). They are: Richard Berkman (‘92), who led the Sea Gulls to a berth in the Division III men’s lacrosse national championship game in 1991, earning First Team All-American honors and playing in the North-South All-Star game; Eric Ungleich (‘93), a two-time men’s lacrosse All-American who played in the 1991 championship game and North-South All-Star game; and Dan Quinn (‘94), a two-sport athlete (football and track) who holds SU’s hammer throw record (168-8) as a former co-captain of the track squad, where he earned All-American honors.

Activities continue at 7 p.m. in Caruthers Hall Auditorium with a free showing of Madagascar, sponsored by the Student Office for Activity Planning (SOAP). Freshmen and first-year students provide additional entertainment during the New Student “X”perience Talent Show 7:30 p.m. in Holloway Hall Auditorium.

Saturday is Family Day, and parents of new students can see slides of what their children accomplished during this summer’s New Student Seminar Outdoor Program from 10-11 a.m. in the Wicomico and Nanticoke rooms of the Guerrieri Center.

The Baltimore Westsiders Marching Band joins local high school bands, homecoming court and students organizations during this year’s Homecoming and Family Parade 10:30 a.m. rain or shine. The parade begins at St. Martin’s Hall and continues through campus toward Sea Gull Stadium.

The SGA hosts a Homecoming Block Party noon-4 p.m. on Wayne Street and the Intramural Fields. The community is invited to enjoy games and other activities, as well as inflatables provided by SOAP.

The Sea Gulls take on Newport News University during this year’s Homecoming football game at 1 p.m. Admission is $4, $2 for non-SU students, $1 for children 12 and under. SU ID holders receive one ticket free.

Following the game, the Office of Alumni Relations and Annual Giving invites current and former students and parents to the Alumni House for SU’s first post-game Alumni Barbecue. Performing there from 5-7 p.m. is alumnus Paul Lewis and his band, YNOT. Admission to the barbecue is $10 for adults, $8 for current SU students, $5 for children under 12. Pre-registration is suggested, but a limited number of tickets will be available at the door. To register or for more information call 410-543-6042.

Alumni have more opportunities to rekindle old friendships during reunions at various locations on and off campus from 4:30-9 p.m. Meanwhile, diners have the chance to taste the best of what SU students’ families have to offer during the third annual Recipes From Home Dinner 5:30-7:30 p.m. in the Bistro and Rotunda of the Commons. Dining Services staff prepare dishes based on recipes submitted by students while the community enjoys musical entertainment, face painting and temporary tattoos. Admission is $8.95, $5.50 for children 6-12, free for children 5 and under.

Families and alumni have the chance to catch another showing of Madagascar at 7 p.m., while magician Brian Brushwood, seen on The Tonight Show with Jay Leno, entertains audiences at 8 p.m. in Holloway Hall Auditorium.

Admission to Homecoming and Family Day events is free unless otherwise noted. Special invitations are required to participate in some reunion events.
