SU Campus Against Violence Program Marks Sexual Assault Awareness Month April 19-22

SALISBURY, MD---Salisbury University’s Campus Against Violence Program marks Sexual Assault Awareness Month with a series of events April 19-22.

Monday, April 19: The Clothesline Project – From 11 a.m.-3 p.m. in Red Square (rain location: the Commons), students are invited to create a T-shirt that honors friends and family members whose lives have been touched by sexual assault or rape.

Tuesday, April 20: Denim Day – From 11 a.m.-4 p.m. in Red Square (rain location: the Commons), members of the University community are encouraged to wear denim in protest of sexual assault. Denim Day began in 1999 to protest an Italian court’s decision to overturn a rape conviction in part because the victim was wearing jeans. Wearing jeans on Denim Day has become an international symbol of protest against erroneous and destructive attitudes about sexual assault. SU’s event is co-sponsored by the Kappa Sigma fraternity and the Sociology Action Club with Campus Against Violence.

Wednesday, April 21: Take Back the Night – From 7-9 p.m. in the Great Hall of Holloway Hall, the Campus Against Violence Program, Residence Life Sexual Assault Awareness Team, Student Health Services and Life Crisis Center host a night of compassion, remembrance and support as sexual assault survivors are honored through personal stories, music, performances, and a candlelight vigil and march.

Thursday, April 22: The Handprint Project – From 11 a.m.-3 p.m. in the lobby of the Commons, men have the opportunity to pledge to not commit or condone sexual violence by placing their cut-out handprints and name on a display board. Kappa Sigma and the Athletics Department co-sponsor the event with Campus Against Violence.

The four-day program is supported by a grant from the U.S. Department of Justice Office on Violence Against Women.

Admission is free and the public is invited. For more information call 410-543-6030 or visit the SU Web site at
