SU Art Galleries Presents 'Language of Regional Spirit' January 16-February 14

SU Art Galleries Presents Language of Regional Spirit January 16-February 14SALISBURY, MD---Salisbury University Art Galleries presents the exhibit “Language of Regional Spirit” by Nelson Smith January 16-February 14 at its Downtown Campus, 118 N. Division St.

An artist lecture is 5:30 p.m. Thursday, February 5. A reception follows from 6:30-8 p.m.

Smith’s recent work involves researching regional landscapes as a source for schematics and image-object relationships. He translates his landscape analysis into an original schematic language, creating graphic “scores,” and studies of regional cultures and mythologies.

Using these, he composes a series of relationships using common objects and remixes the work of landscape painters Alexandre Hogue and Birger Sandzen. Included are selections from his studies in Ireland, southeast Asia and Portland, OR.

Smith’s works are included in public and private collections throughout the Midwest and mid-Atlantic, including New York’s Museum of Modern Art. He has completed residencies in Ireland, New York and elsewhere, including the Vermont Studio Center. In addition, he has exhibited and performed at venues throughout the United States.

Gallery hours are noon-6 p.m. Wednesday-Friday, noon-4 p.m. Saturdays. Sponsored by SU Art Galleries, admission is free and the public is invited. SU Art Galleries programming is supported in part by the Maryland State Arts Council and the Salisbury Wicomico Arts Council.
