SU Announces 2004 Bernstein Award Finalists

SALISBURY, MD---Golf, glass, grapes and gripping entertainment are themes in this year’s Bernstein Achievement Award for Excellence competition, which seeks to further entrepreneurship among Salisbury University students. The winner walks away with $5,000. Competitors are judged on their ideas, their research and the feasibility of their business plans. Four proposals vie for prizes. Sophomore business administration major Tim McFadden proposes a Baltimore-based glass blowing studio called Blown Away Glass Inc. Located minutes from the Inner Harbor in trendy Canton, the 5,000-square-foot building would also house a gallery and gift shop where patrons and tourists could watch unique art being formed. Carapace Entertainment, the brainchild of M.B.A. student Joel Covington of Salisbury, is an Eastern Shore-based movie production company specializing in the horror genre. Start-up funds would be gained from sales of the company’s first movie, Mirror, Mirror. Accounting major Darren Kramer of Annapolis and business administration major Craig Moulton of Commack, NY, both seniors, hope to penetrate the Eastern Shore golfing market with Grip N’ Rip, a driving range that eliminates the need to bend over after hitting a ball. The facility would cater to novice and professional golfers. Senior finance major Rob Davis Jr. of Galena, MD, intends to enter a largely untapped market with Sassafras River Vineyards. Davis views Maryland as a prime area to grow grapes for wine, citing a climate similar to California and Italy. Finalists present their ideas from 2-5:30 p.m. Saturday, May 1, in Holloway Hall Room 114, followed by the announcement of the winner. The public is cordially invited. The Franklin P. Perdue School of Business sponsors the annual competition. For more information call 410-543-6030 or visit the SU website at
