SU Alumni Board Welcomes Two New Members

SALISBURY, MD---The Salisbury University Alumni Association welcomes two new members to its board of directors: Rick Holloway and Cynthia Phillips, both of Salisbury.

Holloway began his formal education at SU as a kindergartener at the University’s former Campus School. He later earned his B.S. in business from SU before receiving his degree in mortuary science from Catonsville Community College in preparation to enter the family business, Holloway Funeral Home.

At SU, Holloway helped found the student radio station, WSSC, in a laundry room in the basement of Manokin Hall. Today, the state-of-the-art station, recently rechristened WXSU, has its own room (sans washers and dryers) in the Guerrieri University Center.

A leader in the Salisbury community, Holloway is a past president of the Salisbury Area Chamber of Commerce, incoming president of the Salisbury Host Lions Club, a board member of Coastal Hospice and a member of the Asbury United Methodist Church Board of Trustees.

“I have always been very interested in SU, especially since I started there at age 5 and graduated college at the same school,” Holloway said. “I am looking forward to learning about where the school is now. I believe the Alumni Association plays a vital role in the success of all institutions.”

Phillips returns to the Alumni Board after a three-year hiatus. She initially served on the board from 1999-2002, helping establish the annual Homecoming golf tournament and serving on the Nominations Committee for Distinguished Faculty awards. Earning her B.S. in education from SU in 1988 and her M.Ed. in 1993, she served as an adjunct professor at the University from 1997-2003, teaching “Communication for Classroom Teachers.”

She began her teaching career at Tangier Combined School in Tangier Island, VA, in 1988. Since then she has taught at Delmar Elementary School, North Salisbury Elementary School and Pemberton Elementary School, where she currently teaches the fifth-grade magnet class. At Pemberton, she established the Fifth Grade Community Service Club, promoting student volunteerism and community improvement through action and leadership.

Phillips has served the community herself as a past president of the Salisbury Junior Service League and a member of the Wellness Community of Delmarva.

“I am excited about being back again on the Alumni Association Board of Directors that is such an essential part of SU,” she said. “The University is integral to our community and provides Salisbury with many services.”
