SALISBURY, MD---Dr. Reema Persad-Clem of Salisbury University’s Biological Sciences Department and organic farmer Jay Martin continue SU’s Environmental Studies Colloquium Series 7 p.m. Wednesday, March 5, in Teacher Education and Technology Center Room 153.

They discuss “The Role of Community in Sustainability and Conservation.”

Persad-Clem, visiting assistant professor at SU, earned her Ph.D. in zoology at Miami University (OH). Her research areas include primate behavioral ecology, community-based conservation and the rainforest ecology of Trinidad, as well as environmental education.

In addition to her work at SU, she is a member of the Earth expeditions and global field program faculty for Miami University’s Project Dragonfly, which promotes environmental education through media, exhibits and other programs.

Martin, of Provident Organic Farms in Bivalve, MD, began gardening organically in upstate New York in 1973. In 1980, he moved to Bivalve, where he worked as a waterman. Five years later, he and his wife, Kathy, founded Silver Seed Greenhouses, a supplier of organic transplants for the mid-Atlantic. He sold the business in 2001 to pursue his dream of creating a safe and sustainable food market in Salisbury.

He has spoken at conferences on organic transplant growing and facilitates workshops to train growers. He also has served on the Future Harvest small farm board of directors, evaluating funding requests for small-scale research and enterprises.

Sponsored by the Environmental Studies Department, admission is free and the public is invited. For more information call 410-543-6030 or visit the SU website at
