New Writing Center at SUThis Fall

class=""MsoNormal"">SALISBURY, MD---Good writing is much more than just editing and proofreading. This fall, Salisbury University offers students those services and more at The University Writing Center at Herb’s Place.

class=""MsoNormal"">The center will develop students’ writing skills by allowing them to explore ideas, analyze their work and grapple with more specific difficulties within their individual writing processes, said Nicole Munday, the interim director. She hopes to provide a coffeehouse atmosphere for students that will be informal and comfortable, but also productive and significant.

class=""MsoNormal"">The center has received support from administrators, faculty and the Student Government Association. “The new writing Center at Herb’s Place will be a significant resource for Salisbury students at all levels,” said Dr. Buchanan, SU Provost, “ In national survey after survey, employers say that improving the writing quality of recent graduates is the most critical need. The increasing use of email and the internet as our way of participating in our global society means that clear writing, expressing critical thinking, is more important than ever before.”

class=""MsoNormal"">“Even the best students can benefit from specialized help from time to time. A campus writing center for SU is long overdue.”

class=""MsoNormal"">Nine students have been hired as consultants based on their writing and communication skills. They are currently training in composition and theory to further their knowledge of tutoring and enhance their conversation skills for the center’s November 1 opening. Student receptionists are scheduling appointments for 30-minute consultation sessions. Drop-in appointments will be welcomed as well.

class=""MsoNormal"">“It is always a good idea for writers to talk through their ideas with others—that way they can refine their ideas, challenge conclusions, and test whether their writing is as clear as it can be,” said Munday.

class=""MsoNormal"">The University Writing Center at Herb’s Place is located on the second floor of the Guerrieri Center. Center hours will be 9 a.m.-9p.m. Mondays- Thursdays and 2-9p.m. Sundays. Future plans include evening workshops for students and a Web site.
