Nabb Research Center Board of Directors 2000-2001 Named

SALISBURY, MD---The Edward H. Nabb Research Center for Delmarva History and Culture at Salisbury State University recently named George W. Gering, Gordon E. Wood Sr. and Pauline M. Batchelder officers for its board of directors for 2000-2001.

Gering, board chairman, entered the Army in March 1943 as an Aviation Cadet. After graduation he went to England with the 8thAir Force, assigned to a B-24 Liberator Squadron. Following WWII Gering received a regular commission in the Air Force and during his 33 year career had various assignments in flying, administrative and command positions, in the United States, England, Korea, Alaska and Turkey, eventually rising to the rank of Colonel. Following retirement Gering moved to Snow Hill, where he has been active in local community work, and served as mayor and president of the Chamber of Commerce and Rotary Club. A lecturer in SSU's Department of History since 1978, Gering has served on the Judiciary and Book Rack boards, chaired the SSU Foundation and prior to this recent election, chair of the Research Center's board for 10 years. Gering and his wife, Cherry, have two children, five grandchildren and two great grandchildren.

Wood, vice chairman, graduated from the University of Delaware with a bachelor's degree in chemical engineering, and his Doctor of Jurisprudence from George Washington University. During his career he has used these degrees as design and development manager of the rocket motor on the Minuteman ICBM, minority counsel in the U.S. House of Representatives for the Public Works and Transportation Committee and Water Resources subcommittee, vice president of government relations for the Olin Corporation and counsel, deputy director of strategic environmental research and development program for the Army Corps of Engineers. When not fishing, traveling, researching family or writing the History of Family in Baltimore Hundred, he serves on the Town of Ocean View Zoning Board, board of directors of Accucap Corporation, Delaware National Bank and Earthspan Corporation and the implementation committee of the Delaware Inland Rivers and Bay Commission. A resident of Ocean View, DE, Gordon and his wife, Patricia, have four sons and 10 grandchildren.

Batchelder, secretary, grew up in Washington, D.C., where she graduated from American University with a degree in French and Spanish. Batchelder's career has been varied, having served as an editor and assistant branch chief with the U.S. Department of State, designer and production manager with the Johns Hopkins University Press, and later as a free-lance editor and designer. At the time of her retirement she and husband, Merritt, moved to Mt. Vernon, where her interests include drawing, print- making, classical music, bird-watching, genealogy and volunteering at the Nabb Research Center. She and her husband have one son, Geoffrey, who is currently pursuing a Ph.D. in philosophy.
