Nabb Photo Exhibit Features Native American Portraits (October 17, 2004)

SALISBURY, MD---“Tracing the Provenance” a late 19th century Native American photo history exhibit, opens Monday, November 1, at the Nabb Research Center for Delmarva History and Culture at Salisbury University.

The exhibit features a collection of original photographic works which illustrate the blend of Western and Native American cultures and a historical perspective of Native American chiefs, villages and environment in 19th century America.

Portraits of notable Native American personalities of the late 19th century including Sitting Bull and Red Cloud, both of whom were involved in Native American struggles for civil rights, are displayed.

Donated by Dr. Wilcomb Washburn, who was associated with the Smithsonian Institution, the collection explores photographic editing practices. The challenging process of identifying the portraits and the photographers inspired the overall theme of tracing the provenance. The collection hangs through Monday, January 31.

Admission is free and the public is invited. Nabb Center hours are 10 a.m.-9 p.m. Monday, 10 a.m.-4 p.m Tuesday-Friday.
