Miller and Dove Nominated by ShoreCorps for All-American Awards

SALISBURY, MD--ShoreCorps/PALS, an AmeriCorps program managed by Salisbury State University, nominated Alice Dove and Cathy Miller for the first annual All-American Awards. The fifth anniversary of AmeriCorps inaugurates a new annual award that honors the accomplishments of the men and women who have served as AmeriCorps members. The alumni being honored with the All- AmeriCorps Award represent thousands of AmeriCorps members who have devoted their energy and idealism to improving our nation's communities.

Dove and Miller were both nominated for their extraordinary service at the Somerset County Department of Social Services. Dove was nominated for the Getting Things Done Award. The category reflects her contributions to the adolescents she served at the department. Dove (1997-1999) was a second year AmeriCorps member and she case managed over 60 girls during her tenure of service. She provided mentoring, tutoring, counseling, crisis intervention and conflict resolution training. Her goal was to provide at-risk adolescents with tools necessary to enhance their life skills.

Dove was a member of the AmeriCorps InterCorps Council, which held most of its meetings in Baltimore. She is currently a student at SSU and will complete her teaching degree next year.

Miller (1997-1998) was nominated for the Leadership Award. This category reflects Miller's contributions to welfare reform and the service she provided to families in the Family Investment program. As a result of Miller's initiative and leadership, the Somerset County Department of Social Services and ShoreCorps/PALS received the first annual Trailblazer Award from the Maryland Department of Human Resources.

Miller's goal is for every welfare recipient to be employed successfully. After Miller completed her term of service, she accepted a position with the Somerset County Department of Social Services.

Dove and Miller were invited to celebrate the fifth year anniversary of AmeriCorps and witness the first All-AmeriCorps Awards at the White House in Washington D.C., recently. President Bill Clinton and Hillary Clinton were present in addition to Coretta Scott King, General Colin Powell, Honorable Sargent Shriver, and Utah Governor Mike Leavitt. After the celebration, AmeriCorps members and guests were invited to meet the President.
