Mentoring Project HonorsSU With Herbert H. Fincher Award

class=""MsoNormal"">SALISBURY, MD---At Salisbury University, students provide service to all parts of the local community, including its youngest residents.

class=""MsoNormal"">The Wicomico Mentoring Project recently honored SU for its volunteer efforts with younger area children, presenting the University with a Herbert H. Fincher Friend of Mentoring Award.

class=""MsoNormal"">“Salisbury University has reached out to the community by encouraging its students to be mentors for our program,” said a grateful Henrietta Parker, project coordinator.

class=""MsoNormal"">More than 100 SU students and staff served as mentors during the 2004-2005 school year. They included volunteers from ShoreCorps/PALS (Partnership for Adolescents on the Lower Shore), the Center for Conflict Resolution and the English, Modern Languages, Marketing, Education, Social Work, and Health, Physical Education and Human Performance departments, Parker said.

class=""MsoNormal"">“This award is a great honor to the talents and efforts of our students, faculty and staff,” said SU Provost David Buchanan. “The Mentoring Project is another wonderful opportunity for the University to become involved in the life of the community and we look forward to continuing with it in the coming year.”

class=""MsoNormal"">The award is named for the late Fincher, a community leader who helped found the Mentoring Project.

class=""MsoNormal"">“Herb knew that children can have wonderful, loving parents who are doing their best to raise their children.  He knew that children can have a loving home, with all of their physical needs being met,” Parker said. “He also knew there are children who do not have everything they need, and those children can also enjoy success with the caring relationship that a mentor can bring.” For more information on the project call 410-677-4586 or visit the project Web site at www.wicomicomentors.org.
