McDermott Publishes Article in Prestigious Harvard Journal

SALISBURY, MD---Dr. E. Patrick McDermott a member of the accounting and legal studies and management faculties legal studies and management faculty in Salisbury University's Franklin P. Perdue School of Business, recently published the article "What's Going On in Mediation: An Empirical Analysis of the Influence of a Mediator's Style on Party Satisfaction and Monetary Benefit" with Dr. Ruth Obar, in the prestigious Harvard Negotiation Law Review, Spring 2004. McDermott has published numerous articles, collaborated on books and participated in several academic presentations. He was the principal researcher on a a member of a research team that conducted three separate studies on mediation for the  presenting results of a study before the U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC). McDermott is the director of research and evaluation at SU's Conflict Resolution Center. Using quantitative analysis from a large database of employment law cases mediated under the EEOC's mediation program, McDermott and Obar hiscollaborator analyzed various self-reported mediator behavior in order to understand if a particular mediation style resulted in a higher participant satisfaction rating or a larger financial settlement. The findings of this study have important implications for the practice of mediation and academic debate surrounding the issues of mediator style and dispute resolution program design.
