MSMTA Convention Scheduled at SU November 1-2

SALISBURY, MD---The Maryland State Music Teachers Association (MSMTA) holds its annual fall convention at Salisbury University Saturday-Sunday, November 1-2. The Fulton School of Liberal Arts and the Department of Music co-sponsor this event with MSMTA. Sessions are centered on musician wellness.  

Featured guest artists include Rebecca Payne Shockley, author of Mapping Music: For Faster Learning and Secure Memory-A Guide for Piano Teachers and Students and professor and chair of piano pedagogy at the University of Minnesota; Gail Berenson, contributing editor of A Symposium for Pianists and Teachers: Strategies to Develop the Mind and Body for Optimal Performance and chair of the Keyboard Division at Ohio University and vice-president of the Music Teachers National Association; Joanne Kirchner, contributing author to the June 2003 issue of  Medical Problems of  Performing Artists: A Qualitative Inquiry into Musical Performance Anxiety and coordinator of the  Secondary Piano Program at Temple University; Thomas Mastroianni, former dean of the Benjamin T. Rome School of Music and former chair of the Department of Piano at The Catholic University of America; Linda Cockey, author of MSMTA’s Annotated Bibliography on Musician Wellness and chair of the  SU Music Department, and Kathryn Kalmanson, head of reference at Blackwell Library.

The presentations culminate with a panel of the presenters: Pat Lamboni, SU head athletic trainer; Dr. Bob McBrien, retired director of SU’s Counseling Services; and Nancy Roldan of the Peabody Institute. Performances during the convention include the Oakton Six Piano Ensemble from Oakton College in Chicago and Sunday Jazz at Lunch with the SU Jazz Ensemble.
