John Tibbitts International Films Guest Lecturer November 4SALISBURY, MD--The International Film Series at Salisbury State features guest lecturer Dr. John C. Tibbetts of the University of Kansas on Wednesday, November 4. His presentation, Hollywood Rides with the Devil: The Kansas-Missouri Border Wars on Film, is at 7 p.m. in Devilbiss Hall Auditorium. The Kansas-Missouri Border Wars, a time in which pro-slavery and anti-slavery factions in Missouri and Kansas fought for control of Bleeding Kansas, are once again the subject of an upcoming film, Ride with the Devil (1999). Directed by Ang Lee, the film is adapted from Daniel Woodrell s novel Woe to Live On (1989).
Tibbetts, who coauthored The Encyclopedia of Novels into Film with SSU faculty member Dr. Jim Welsh, surveys earlier movie treatments of the conflict especially the circumstances surrounding the notorious raid by William Clarke Quantrill upon the free-state fortress of Lawrence, KS, in summer 1863. His presentation, free and open to the public, includes videotaped interviews with the set s film producer, Thomas Schamus, and Woodrell, as well as materials from the Lawrence Historical Society pertaining to the life and times of Quantrill.
