Homecoming 2008 Scheduled October 16-19

SALISBURY, MD---From a student-led block party to tours of a brand new education building, Salisbury University’s 2008 Homecoming Weekend is packed with excitement.

Events begin Thursday, October 16, with the annual emeriti faculty and retired staff luncheon from noon-2 p.m. in the Wicomico Room of the Guerrieri University Center, followed by tours of SU’s new Teacher Education and Technology Center (TETC). Admission to the luncheon is by invitation.

Events continue Friday, October 17. Daytime highlights include a Varsity Club-sponsored golf tournament 10 a.m. at Nutters Crossing Golf Course and a powderpuff football game sponsored by the Residence Hall Association at 3:30 p.m. on the Holloway Hall Lawn.

The SU Athletics Hall of Fame inducts five new members during its annual banquet 6 p.m. in the Wicomico Room of the Guerrieri University Center. They are: All-American softball third baseman Jen Dodson (’98), men’s tennis All-American Doug Neagle (’98), All-American softball first baseman Myra Parks (’98), women’s basketball player and All-Capital Athletic Conference women’s soccer player Ava Tasker (’96), and softball thirdbaseman and All-American field hockey player Terri Timmons (’88). Admission is $30, $25 for past inductees. Pre-registration is required.

Activities continue with a Taste of the Chesapeake dinner featuring local band Muskrat Sally from 5-7 p.m. in the Commons. Cost is $9.97, $6.06 for children ages 6-12, free for children 5 and under. A free showing of Step Brothers, sponsored by the Student Office for Activity Planning (SOAP), is 8 p.m. in Caruthers Hall Auditorium.  The film is also shown 10 p.m. Saturday, October 18, and 7 and 10 p.m. Sunday, October 19.

The Alumni House and Miller Garden are open for visits from 9 a.m.-2 p.m. Saturday, October 20. Open houses at the Admissions House and the Geography and Geosciences Department are 10 a.m.-noon.
The Bellavance Honors Center hosts a free continental breakfast for honors students, alumni and guests from 9-11 a.m. Families and alumni also are invited for refreshments at the TETC from 9:15-10 a.m. Tours follow.

The Student Government Association hosts a Homecoming Block Party noon-4 p.m. on Wayne Street at the Intramural Fields. The community is invited to enjoy games and other activities, as well as inflatables provided by SOAP.

The Sea Gulls take on Lake Erie College during this year’s Homecoming football game at 1 p.m. Admission is $4, $2 for non-SU students, and $1 for children 12 and under. SU ID holders receive one ticket free. The Office of Alumni Relations and Annual Giving sponsors a hospitality tent from noon-4 p.m. at Sea Gull Stadium. A Greek tent is also available for alumni of SU’s fraternities and sororities.

Other athletics highlights include a ring ceremony for SU’s 2008 NCAA Division III men’s lacrosse team at 4 p.m. in Holloway Hall Auditorium and SU’s field hockey team vs. The College of New Jersey 6 p.m. at Sea Gull Stadium.

The Untouchables Dance Club performs in Henson Plaza from 4-4:30 p.m. as sports fans make their way back to main campus from the football game. The Multicultural Student Services Office  hosts a post-game jazz social in the Gull’s Nest of the Guerrieri University Center from 4-7 p.m. Admission is $20, and pre-registration is required.

University Dining Services and the Cultural Affairs Office sponsor an Oktoberfest dinner in the Commons from 5-7 p.m. with music by SU faculty band Pugsly. Admission is $9.97, $6.06 for children ages 6-11, free for children 5 and under.

Homecoming concludes with an ROTC family picnic from noon-3 p.m. Sunday, October 19, in the Alumni House Garden.
