Gulls Going Green, WET Present 'Dirt! The Movie' Thursday, February 9

SALISBURY, MD---Since the beginning of mankind, dirt has been the basis of human survival. More recently, however, human interaction with nature has turned dirt “dirty.”

Salisbury University’s Gulls Going Green Club and the Wicomico Environmental Trust explore the concept of dirt and pollution during a screening of the award-winning documentary Dirt! The Movie 7 p.m. Thursday, February 9. The film is shown in Henson Science Hall Room 103.

The movie examines mankind’s dependence on dirt for food, shelter and fuel, contrasted with modern development, mining and farming practices some say have turned Earth’s skin into a polluted landscape.

The Sundance Film Festival nominee, directed by Gene Rosow and Bill Benenson, was inspired by the book Dirt: The Ecstatic Skin of the Earth by William Bryant Logan. It was a best documentary award winner at the 2009 Visions/Voices Environmental Film Festival and named “Best Film for Our Future” at the 2009 Mendocino Film Festival.
