Guerrieri Art Space Presents 'The Inner Machinations of My Mind Are an Enigma' November 1-December 13

The Inner Machinations of My Mind Are An EnigmaSALISBURY, MD---The Guerrieri University Center Art Space hosts the painting exhibit “The Inner Machinations of My Mind Are an Enigma” by Salisbury University seniors Erin Cissell and Caylin Zerr from November 1-December 13.

The title is taken from a quote by character Patrick Star from the Nickelodeon cartoon SpongeBob SquarePants.

Both artists are pursuing the B.F.A. while studying drawing at SU, with experience in other mediums such as painting, photography, pen and ink, colored pencil and marker. Cissell considers her whimsical works experimental, carefully planning her drawings, but applying colors and line work on a whim. Zerr believes her fanciful works exemplify the Marshall McLuhan quote, “Art is anything you can get away with.”

“Art comes in different shapes and forms; some work is more abstract, others are expressive, and in my case, it is illustrative with a hint of realism,” said Cissell. “I never believed that art has to be representative of the realistic world to be considered ‘actual art.’ How can such a statement be applicable when everyone has their own personal view of the world, resulting in separate realities?

“My reality consists of Copic Marker cartoons, wild chalk pastel line work, big-eyed characters, various emotions, comical animals and charcoal-coated darkness. These are things that surround my life, so my art is indeed representative of the realistic world, just my realistic world in particular. I was born with these eyes, this mind and this imagination specifically so I could share them with you.”

“I have never been a conventional artist. I see things in a way that sometimes parallels the mind of a child in the sense that I am still drawn to bright colors, expressive characters, and whimsical landscapes. Perhaps I never really grew up. Because of this mindset, you will find that my art is just fun. It is there to make my viewers happy.

“I’ve never been one for traditional art, but my experience in figure drawing and overall art techniques left me with the skills to create smooth shading, cohesive compositions and highly detailed line work. My end goal is always to wow the viewer, so don’t expect anything conventional. Keep an open mind and you will be able to get a small glimpse into the amazing world that lives inside my head.”

The Art Space is located in the Guerrieri Center’s second-floor concourse. Admission is free and the public is invited. For more information call 410-543-6247 or visit the Art Space website at
